Ada Zanditon's 'Echolocation' Collection for Autumn Winter 2010-11

on 27/3/10

It is not every day that a designer's collection is inspired by bats, but this is exactly where up & coming eco designer label Ada Zandition drew her inspiration from for her Autumn Winter 2010-11 range. Launched via Esthethica at London Fashion Week, The Ethical Fashion Show, Paris and a runway show as part of the Vauxhall Fashion Show Ones to Watch, Ada's 'Echolocation' collection concentrated on the theme of biodiversity & biomimicry to great effect.

The concept behind her designs focused on the way the humble bat navigates using a high frequency system, similar to sonar, creating its own sonic maps from the noises it makes echoing back. Ada turned this idea into nocturnal 'vision' prints, illustrations and photography within her collections. She also used it for the emphasis for her 'body con'  silhouette that uses geometric cutting to 'ripple softly away from the body'.

The theme continues throughout the collection with the colour palette also drawing upon the bats' flights at dusk with rich, deep tones, and digitally printed fabrics that have webbed bare branches & beating wings to create dramatic focal points. Ada, of course, also donates part of the proceeds to her tee shirt collection to the Bats Conservation Trust, which is what you would expect from an ethical designer that puts the environment and nature at the heart of her business.

Although a relatively new label, The Trend Boutique can see great potential from this young designer that graduated from London College of Fashion with a 1st, and gained various experience working with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders and Gareth Pugh. We also like the way she has flexed her eco-credentials from the very start of her career, freelancing for Oxfam & with the Centre for Sustainable Design's Shared Talent project in South Africa.
