Arthur's Seat by Julie Vermeille

on 9/4/10

For Spring Summer 2011 and beyond, The Trend Boutique are seeing the emergence of a counter trend to the digital world, one that has a more human & craft-based method of design, that also sees the return of a sophisticated, folkloric aesthetic.

Artist Julie Vermeille, who's latest book 'Arthur's seat' is a beautifully illustrated children's story for all ages, fits perfectly with this movement. Presented for the first time as part of 'Craft London, Emerging Talents 2010', the book is presented in a 3D setting especially made for the exhibition space.

Handmade with old fabric, lace and buttons she has created a world of fantasy through which to wander & explore that has a wonderful naivety to it.

Originally hailing from France, Julie's background is that she has BTEC in Printing & BA (Hons) in Illustration from the Camberwell College of Art and it is these two skills that naturally combine to create the essence of Julie's work. What's interesting is as well as producing her own exquisite hand-bound books, Julie has worked for Chocolate Rain Hong Kong, The House of Fairy Tales (with Gavin Turk), Creature Magazine London, plus has forthcoming work being published in a Fil Rouge Press book & a Basheer publication in Spring 2010, proving her creative style is very much in demand.

Julie Vermeille’s work is very much based on her ink drawings because she 'likes the fluidity of the medium, the surprises that come from the shapes laid on the paper'. 'I like the idea of things happening a little by chance', she says.

Relying greatly on patterned fabrics, which inspire the floral, vegetal elements in her images. Each piece has the 'reassuring quality of childhood', as well as the powerful folkloric dimension, often having been created from the point of view of a particular culture or group of people. The thread Julie uses in her work, act as a 'symbol of time', 'of relations between one space and another; closeness, tightness, as well as breakages and knots'.

Recently Julie has worked on a series of books based on fairytales, dealing with the ambiguity of two worlds: the children’s one, and the adult one. As she puts it: “stories for children but with hidden darker meanings, helping the process of growing up, if we ever have to... ”. She adds: “I am inspired by children's books because of their creativity, their freedom in shape, material, texture and format”.

The Trend Boutique love Julie Vermeille's magical world that reminds us of the London scenes in Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, a wistful, softly surreal place that's perfectly captured in its own bubble, just like a snowglobe that you want to shake to see the flakes of glitter fall.
