Autumn Winter 2011-12 'Guide to the Season' - Folk Trend Report
on 16/8/10
The return of folklore is probably the most important trend for Autumn Winter 2011-12 as we reconnect with the outdoors & look to this traditional way of life for styling direction.
Evolving from the ‘Heritage’ & ‘Nature’ themes of last season, this trend has a soft wintery feel through knitted crafts and designs that blend with the natural elements, whilst a deep intensity creates a more urban fashion alternative.
Trend Direction 1: Craft Folk
Folksy craft comes to the fore, with products & the home being transformed in winter pastels & a soft ‘knitted’ touch. Humble & honest in its approach, the idea is to play with sheer & felted textures, whilst a burst of Nordic or nature inspired prints work well against a slightly industrial backdrop.
Everything has a home-spun feel as we take our renewed passion for craftsmanship and traditional techniques to the next level.

Trend Direction 2: Great Outdoors
An enhanced sense of wellbeing & inner calmness is bought about through reconnecting with the great outdoors and the natural elements. Overcast skies & wintery days create a chance for us to reflect and breathe, whilst escaping the humdrum & mundane.
Moving on from the cocooning of previous seasons, we see the resurgence of the ‘tree house’ as a key reference point.

Trend Direction 3: Rurban Life
A neutral, rustic colour palette as we focus on new humble, ‘earthy’ ideologies for inspiration.
Rural lifestyles are adopted in the city, whilst we don’t want to give up our urban commodities when we move to the countryside. This new socio-economic trend is inspiring a strong visual aesthetic with a whole host of product designs that cater to the new ‘Rurbanite’.

Trend Direction 4: Intense Folk
This final ‘folk’ trend direction creates intensity through the use of tone-on-tone shades of deep & vibrant reds, with accents of golden yellow.
Folk for this season gets darker through digital prints, whilst ‘Ottoman’ or ‘Nordic’ influenced bold patterns juxtapose one another to create an intensity that is both flamboyant & rich in cultural contrasts.
