The Trend Boutique love these sculptural chairs created for Moroso by Swiss designer Philippe Bestenheider that were exhibited last year at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. Completely on trend for 2010, these chairs have a real 'spirit' of the African continent with their burst of colour delivered through the eclectic mix of fabrics and a strong, organic form reminiscent of iconic African carvings.

Named 'Binta', the designer Philippe Bestenheider was truly inspired by Africa taking the essence of those carvings, but creating the chairs in a softer polyurethane rubber form. By creating a real focus on the base of the chairs Philippe wanted it to seem that the chairs were rooted to the ground like the impressive 'Baobab' tree, native to Africa (the trunk circumference of which can measure up to an impressive 36ft in diameter).
Added to this frame comes its upholstery, a beautiful patchwork of wax fabrics, the traditional textiles worn by some African women with contrasting patterns and colours that emphasise the armchair’s shape. Brash, bright colour contrasts to create a bold statement that feels at ease in both a contemporary or traditional setting due to its modern craftmanship that seamlessly blends tradition with the new.

The only thing that is missing from the Binta armchair is the actual arms that would be a traditional feature, however this fantastic contemporary design looks set to become one of those iconic pieces of furniture in the future. Philippe's work including the Binta Armchair and his 'Lui 5' chair created for Fratelli Boffi have already caught the attention of the major trend prediction agencies and we are not surprised as they seem effortlessly on trend. Definitely a name to watch
