Creative Textile Designs by Pinaki Studios

on 12/12/10

Here at The Trend Boutique we really love the distressed qualities in the fabrics designed by Pinaki Studios and feel that they fit perfectly into our Autumn Winter 2011 "Worn" trend. This amazingly talented design studio creates very individual & directional pieces that are used by fashion & costume designers, interior companies and set designers to name but a few.

Established by Arantza Vilas who started her career by gaining an MA in Textile Futures from Central Saint Martins back in 2002, Pinaki Studios have been able to seamlessly blend the worlds of art & design to achieve stunning & technically competent pieces.

Running through all of Pinaki Studio's research is the idea of encompassing various abrasive techniques to create the most delicate of pieces. In her designs, Arantza sees that 'the process and materials are both indicative of time’s elusive passage' which she achieves through 'de-forming, un-forming and re-forming fabrics: distorting in order to spur a cycle of re-creation and distorting weaves by displacing interwoven structures, fading patterns, re-scaling existing patterns'.

We just love the depth of colour and the fragile qualities of her designs, especially when worked into the gentle wings of moths & butterflies and wearable creatures as seen in 'Souvenirs Entomologiques'

Added to her research Arantza has also taken part in various projects, including a collaboration with Italian leather company Foglizzo,  worked on the costumes for the film of The Phantom of the Opera and  joined together with Sky TV to create the innovative costume used in the TV drama Skellig. All of which goes to highlight the standing this innovative design studio has, that has also been recognised in the press with the likes of Selvedge Magazine & International Textiles.

Arantza has taken part in a wide variety of exhibitions & shows this year, from Estampa at the International Contemporary Editions Art Fair held in Madrid, Spain to talking to recent graduates on how to get into craft at the Futurising event and her counterparts at 'Assemble' the Crafts Council conference. She also is a trends writer for El Observatorio de Tendencias del Habitat.

What is fascinating with Arantza Vilas & her company Pinaki Studios is how she is able to push the boundaries at so many levels, yet still as a creative artist & designer have time to give something back to future generations. When you take a look at her work & level of talent within this field you can really understand why she is so in demand.
