With her heart divided between a love for nature and creativity, Ilaria Venturini Fendi, the founder of Carmina Campus has been able to combine the both to great effect.
The ethos behind her company is based upon her strong feelings about consumption and the way that we need to change as a society to ensure that we can lessen our environmental impact. In less than two years, Ilaria was able to create Carmina Campus, which has become a workshop that makes bags, accessories, pieces of furniture and design.

The company employs rejected virgin materials or gives new life and use to existing textiles, metals, plastic, wood, by reconverting them without any industrial processes (that would require the use of chemical agents), but in a more natural and ecologically sound way. Using every sort of material is considered, examined, handled and worked by expert Italian hands as if it were extremely rare and precious.
Its original use is forgotten and a piece of garden shade, an old embroidered cushion, a zip found in a job lot, acquire a value and a dignity previously unknown to themselves. At times inspired the design is inspired by the materials at hand, sometimes it is inspired by wanting to make an object with specific new features, such as a Carmina Campus bag, lamp, or bracelet.

What is great about this method of design, sourcing and production means that no two items of the same kind are ever identical. The history of each single piece is hand written on a tag, that comes with it, bearing details on the origin and life of its specific materials, plus the time used for its creation and making, and also an archive number.
Carmina Campus reclaims goods from the most varied of suppliers, but it most amazingly also transforms objects and semi-finished products bought from working communities of the Third world. Since the very beginning, Carmina Campus has been working with NGOs operating mostly in Africa, to fund projects and work programmes for the benefit of women and supporting actions in favour of environmental protection.
