Foldaway Bookshop at The London Festival of Architecture 2010

on 1/7/10

The Trend Boutique like this new edition to the continuing trend for pop-up stores, the Foldaway Bookshop will be open for 13 days as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2010 stocking a variety of RIBA books, as well as a selection of publications such as artists' books & vintage collections. For Spring Summer 2011, The Trend Boutique like other trend agencies are talking about the move away from the digital to the simple joys of papercraft & the use of packaging within store fixtures & fittings. Part of the shift towards a new sustainable lifestyle where we respect the basic things in life, whilst taking an upbeat approach to our new modest ways.

We like the way this concept was originally inspired by the open pages of a book and created specially for the London Festival of Architecture 2010 by design studio Campaign, Foldaway bookshop contains four walls, shelving and a sales counter made entirely from cardboard which will be recyled at the end of the festival. Sheets of cardboard 4.7m x 2.17m and 10mm thick are folded to concertina along each of the four interior walls. Lengths of cardboard inserted horizontally across the concertina create two shelves around the room, to display the publications featured in the store.

To enhance browsing and buying, a number of London's practicing architects and critics have been selected to recommend books which are displayed within the store. The Foldaway Bookshop though is actually much more than just a store as also acts as an inpromtu venue with projections of clips from seminal films featuring modern, as well as, book launches, talks and signings are all being held by Claire Curtice Publicists. Whilst on display in a bespoke cardboard vitrine selected vintage copies of the premier international architectural magazine, Architectural Design which have been sourced from the personal collection of the late Monica Pidgeon who edited the journal 1945-75.

The Foldaway Bookshop is such a clever, yet simple idea we can see this concept being picked up and used in a variety of retail concepts. With its pared down aesthetics & eco credentials, this new store is perfect for our new austere way of living whilst still enticing & fun for the customer.
