Profile Information:

Knitwear designer Elizabeth Dyson has just graduated from Nottingham Trent University.Throughout her time at Nottingham Trent, Elizabeth has been passionate about working with beautiful yarns and colours, translating these into textures and then finally into garments. Elizabeth spent a year in industry, including working at a swatch studio, which allowed her to develop her knitting skills and increase her speed, precision and creativity.

Elizabeth's final collection is named 'Wrap Me Up. Protect Me!.' and is based around the idea of growing up and entering the 'BIg Bad World', while being worried about being accepted. All of the graments have been made using soft to the skin yarns to give you the feeling of being wrapped up.

What was the inspiration behind your final collection / project?

My collection is titled ‘Wrap Me Up. Protect Me!’ and is all about taking the inevitable leap into the ‘Big Bad World’ and the apprehension of being accepted. Words such as cosy, comforting and cocooning translate into fluffy mohair yarns. Fabrics are soft to the skin, inspired by the idea of being wrapped up in cotton wool. Comfort blankets are mirrored by the use of patchwork fabric. Warning markings within nature protect delicate surfaces and are highly influential within pattern inspiration. In contrast, the excitement of freedom, change and new opportunities are conveyed through vibrant colours. The use of hazy pastel tones relate back to childhood; a time of naivety and safety.

Describe the key features of your collection / project?

My strengths are working with colour and creating beautiful textures; both are key within my collection.

Have you completed any work experience or industry collaborations?

After spending year three of my course in industry, I am more aware of commercial aspects of the design process. I was lucky enough to secure placements with Sophie Steller and Giles Deacon in London. I then went on to complete a placement with DKNY in New York.

What are your short or long-term career aspirations?

I am very open minded and will give my all to every opportunity that comes my way. I would like to travel and see the world - there is so much out there to be inspired by.

Do you have any words of wisdom that you could pass on to 1st or 2nd year students?

Never lose enthusiasm and always believe in your ideas.
