Knitting Clock By Siren E Wilhelmsen

on 25/2/11

As featured in our Autumn Winter 2011-12 'Folk' trend, Siren Elise Wilhelmsen's knitted clock measures the time in a three-dimensional form, in volume.  The Trend Boutique love that after 365 days a two-metre long scarf will have been created.

Fascinated by everyday incidents, unconscious ways of acting and invisible processes, Siren Elise's knitted clock was inspired by the things we take for granted, like time passing.

It is knitting the hours and the days and shows the time as something that is constantly moving, changing and developing. It counts the twenty-four hours per day. For each half and entire hour a needle is knitting a mesh, one day makes one knitted line. After one year the yarn has to be replaced with a new one and a new year can be knitted. The year that has past is this year’s scarf.  And the coming year is the thread still unknitted.

Siren Elise Wilhelmsen is a one-girl-company based in Berlin.  She studied fashion for a year at University of Arts Berlin and made her own brand hand-making bags sewn out of bike-wheels.  Siren says, "I have always loved to mix odd materials and techniques and the wish to give the experiments a broader and more functional arena made me exchange the catwalk with the everyday surroundings".

She received two awards for packaging design, and after being selected for several exhibitions she decided that her path was in the design process.  "And now, after finishing my diploma, the real journey starts.  This is the beginning."
