Mourning Jewellery by Kirsten Spuijbroek

Another artist we would like to share from our 'Fragility' trend report added to the site earlier this year, Kirsten Spuijbroek's 'Mourning Jewellery' is so beautiful and we love the haunting imagery in which she presents her work.

Spuijbroek likes to create by researching materials and techniques, these two combined often lead to her designs.  "I start with a concept, a story I would like to tell.  I usually have a strong tendency towards certain materials which I see fit for the story.  Then I just simply start experimenting with these materials, letting the experiment lead the way to unexpected forms from which the designs are born.  It is creating what is unknown."

Spuijbroek's Mourning Jewellery is created from porcelain out of techniques she has worked on developing herself.  For the necklace below, flowers were dipped in porcelain slip and once the porcelain is kilned, the flowers completely burn away.  Once the porcelain is opened up, the imprints of the flowers become visible, showing amazing detail of the flowers that once where.

Spuijbroek is driven by her fascination for deep human emotions, traditions and symbolism which are a constant source of inspiration.  She likes to show those often neglected emotions in her jewellery as a mean to stay connected with the inner self. She says that, "jewellery is a hyper personal piece of art that by wearing makes contact with your body.  It shows who you are on the inside, without it being a fashion statement."

Believing that the modern way of living focuses mainly on success and that we often forget to pay attention to the deeper meanings in life such as mourning, Spuijbroek says that people should pay more attention to such very important moments in life and take their time, "not just for themselves but also for a meaningful environment".

Her jewellery is a combination of emotions and directed experiments which lead to unexpected but delicate and sentimental pieces of art.
