The Raw-Edges Design Studio recently caught our attention at the 50th edition of Salone Internazionale del Mobile this April. We have featured them as part of our Autumn Winter 2012-13 'Sharp' trend and thought we'd share more of their colourful products and design.
The Raw-Edges design team consists of Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, two Royal College of Art Graduates in 2006. Yael’s main focus includes turning two-dimensional sheet materials into curvaceous functional forms, whereas Shay is fascinated by how things move, function and react. Together they aim to create objects that have never been seen before.
'Pinha proposes a playful approach to lighting through personalization.' This lighting design is constructed from a cork base to which a printed-paper shade isfastened. The user has the final say on how Pinha looks by chosing the shade from a variety of different patterns and drawings. The ambience of a room can also be altered by pinning the shade at different points, allowing the range of flowing light to be changed.

The Cappellini Tailored Wood Bench is a project based around process experimentation. Whereas veneer is usually used to cover solid wood surfaces, for Tailored Wood this traditional process is opposed. By first creating an empty volume with the veneer, Tailored Wood is later filled with constructive foam. The foam unexpectedly expands within the volume and creates a unique and surprising crinkled wooden surface. This process means that even within industrial production, every final product will be slightly different from another.

The Coiling Collection is a collection of interior objects made from 100% Woollen felt and silicon. Long strips of felt are coiled and formed into a three dimensional body. One side of the felt is left in its natural softness, where the other side is saturated with silicon. The felt observes the silicon into its fibres and together they set into a hybrid material with structural build. This project was inspired by the composite of materials, a combination between bonding and structural materials, similar to reinforce concrete or the ancient cob set from mud and straw.

We love the texture qualities created through the use of felt and silicone and the colour clashing of vibrant colour blocks throughout the Raw-Edges work. Spring Summer 2012 sees an intense colour theme in which these coiled interior pieces would fit perfectly.
