Rustical x Industrial by Frank Michels

The Trend Boutique really like the work of recent graduate Frank Michels whose designs were seen as part of the exhibition & design week DMY, Berlin. Graduating in Product Design this year from the University of Applied Science in Berlin, Frank's work perfectly captures the current 'Rurban' spirit that we have identified as underlying social trend movement, whilst importantly ensuring a sustainability & emotional connection to his work.

As Frank identifies, his products have one main duty 'they should guarantee functional and emotional sustainability' and his work 'rustical x industrial' is a series of furnishings that derive from taking inspiration & reference points from 'rural and suburban milieus'. His simple furniture pieces may at first glance belie the thought & consideration that has gone into each process & piece. Using a combination of classical crafts & digital manufacturing techniques the results are effortless looking pieces of modern product design and formed part of his final collection.

With some of the designs being treated in a simple, upbeat colour palette this further enhances the rather rustic feel to the furniture, rather than distracting from the materials, each finish is kept basic allowing the little imperfections to shine through. The overall feel is one that of a completely pared-down, frugal spirit completely right for now and our new sense of no-frills design.

The Trend Boutique not only liked 'Rustical x Industrial', but we found Frank Michel's portfolio has some other amazing designs in it such as his charming 'Colouring Book Furniture' , we also thought some of his visual communication & screen print pieces were impressive too. Take a look at his 'Bricolage' ceramics that we featured in the Spring Summer 2011 trends within the Austerity theme, where he fashions beautiful One-offs from other pieces or whatever he can find.
