Sculptural Jewellery by Dandi Maestre
on 23/11/11
The Trend Boutique have already started to see early directions of our Spring Summer 2012 'Intense' trend coming through, and some of Dandi Maestre's sculptural jewellery pieces take this Argentinian spirit with their South American feel, inspired from her travels.
"I believe in individuality. I am inspired by organic materials as they speak to me. It is all about the experimental. I design extreme objects, bold and beautiful, pieces of sculpture rather than jewellery that create breathtaking statements."
Dandi Maestre started her career as a graphic designer, having studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York and receiving 'The School of Visual Arts Rhodes Family Award for Outstanding Achievement in Media Arts' she then had her design company for many years in Bogota. Dandi says that reinventing herself has been the most challenging and rewarding decision she has ever made, after deciding she needed more creative freedom than she was getting from graphic design.

Raw Horn Cuffs/Bangles all made from organic materials by Dandi Maestre
Dandi takes her inspiration from nature, from their forms and their natural raw beauty. She likes to explore the organic shapes found in bone and driftwood, in shed antlers and amber, in coconuts and bullhorns, in natural fibre and seeds, in rough emeralds and crocodile skins, in skulls and shells, trying to create a dialogue with the naturalo world through her work.

Each piece is handmade from elements found in shores, rivers, jungles and forests. Incorporating these shapes in her designs, Dandi makes very large extreme pieces with a natural look and a flowing and curving appearance, with a minimum of industrial processes. Dandi's aim is to elevate organic elements, their natural color and textures to a new level of sophistication - (a combination of the Japanese design philosophy wabi-sabi: which nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect).

The pieces have a clear influence from travelling and Dandi's respect of indigenous and tribal cultures around the world. Her designs show a very strong mix of naïve and urban cultures.
