Sculptures by Anna-Wili Highfield
on 15/1/11
The Trend Boutique featured the work of Anna-Wili Highfield in its 'Guide to the Season' for Spring Summer 2011 for the Heritage trend direction, however her work fits so perfectly with this & the microtrend 'Papercraft' we wanted to revisit her amazing sculptures as a 'cool find'.
What we love about her sculptures is that from such humble materials Anna-Wili can create such stunning pieces, each one captures the spirit of the animal she is portray perfectly. We also like the Victorian curiosity feel to some of her work, such as the creatures captured in bell jars, however in equal measure we like the simple, rustic qualities too for instance where the single nail secures the sculpture or those basic materials used.

Based in Sydney, Anna-Wili originally graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts before working at the famous Sydney Opera House where she worked as a scenic artist for two years. Since then she has been exhibiting in small artist run spaces, as well as exhibiting at the Anthropologie Gallery in New York.
How Anna-Wili works is for the paper sculptures she takes archival cotton paper, that she then paints & sews together to finally create the figure of an animal. When completing the copper pipe sculptures she tries to to retain a simple form to them so that they are reminiscent of line drawings.

Already sort-after, her sculptures have now been purchased & displayed across the world, and we can see why she is so in demand as she perfectly captures the spirit of our more humble aspirations & aesthetic reference points whilst still creating hugely desirable statement pieces.
