Spring Summer 2012 Resort Collection by Matthew Williamson
on 12/9/11
The Trend Boutique recently used the Matthew Williamson collections as one of their key reference points for the their Spring Summer 2012 Fashion Trend Report. As we wait for London Fashion Week, we thought now would be a good time to take a look at his recent 'Resort' collection for 2012 that was revealed earlier this summer.
Resort collections in general are becoming more & more important, giving retailers a vital update & bridge between seasons whilst for press & trend companies they provide a great early insight into the designer's mood for the main collections later in the year. With the Matthew Williamson we simply loved this stunning range that focuses on easy glamour and a laid-back luxe feel and was beautifully photographed by James Kelly in London’s Mayfair.

Inspired by the art and culture of Japan and the Far East, the collection featureslandscape prints that are reflective of classical Japanese water colours. Mattew Williamson contrasts inspiration from the cityscapes of Tokyo with prints from traditional Japanese water gardens. Shapes were also inspired by the Japanese culture with kimono style dresses and belts similar to the tradition obis.

Natural fabrics were used throughout the collection, such as silk and linen combined with embroidery, hand sequin work and intricate metal embellishment techniques to give a modern interpretation of the more traditional feel of the clothing shapes. The collection also retains its modern edge with 'pops' of neon pink and lime accenting the jade, raspberry, coral and grape tones of the colour palette.

This range has all the elements you would normally associate with Matthew Williamson and the introduction of Japanese references adds a new dimension to his work, whilst providing the a great canvas for his bold use of colour. The collection also offers updates to the staple shapes that we have come to love, with an embellished black dress and drop-waist shift dresses creating a perfect balance between statement pieces and everydaywear.
