The Trend Boutique really love the work of Studio Sjoerd Jonkers who is one of the latest in a long tradition of amazingly talented Dutch designers & artists. Blending new technologies with primitive production methods this recent graduate aims to create exciting new designs, and we definitely think he has having featured his 'Neolastic Vases & Tableware' in our 'rurban' trend direction for Autumn Winter 2011-12. His latest designs have an artisan feel through the high level of craftsmanship & work that goes into each carpet.

During a two month stay in Casablanca, Morocco, Sjoerd Jonkers designed a series of knot-end carpets. Jonkers was taking part in a Dutch design team as a rising talent. The Dutch design team is composed of established practicans (Sophie Krier, Bas van Beek, Erik Wong) and upcoming talents (David van der Veldt, Dawn Ray and Sjoerd Jonkers), all affiliated through teaching and studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam.

The carpets are made from an industrial rope which is manufactured in Morocco. The rope is made of 4 threads of tricot and wrapped up with cotton by machines. The 4 threads come in random colours, Jonkers selected different colour combinations for his knotted carpets. After manufacturing the rope is handknotted and sewn into a carpet by Rachid, Abdalkabir and Mohamad at Bourja Larbi Factory, Casablanca, Morocco. Each rug has an amazing level of workmanship that goes into them with 50 meters of industrial rope being knotted into a Tapis Noués Petit, which is approximately 250 knots in this one alone.

As a new designer The Trend Boutique like the way Sjoerd has achieved a seamless link between old & modern design techniques alongside his fresh approach to working with his factories, how many can say they know the name of the individuals that make their products nowadays. Definitely a name to watch, we look forward to featuring a lot more of his work in the near future.
