‘This is Design’ is a celebration of the Design Museum’s collection, which explores the impact of design in our modern world and considers how design shapes our lives and our contemporary culture. The collection contains early items of mass manufacture in addition to cutting edge contemporary works, including furniture, fashion, transport, products, ceramics and graphics.

The exhibition revolves around 4 main themes – identity, manufacturing innovations, the digital revolution and lifecycle. Within these themes, the exhibition will consider how design makes use of the modern world and how it can act as a visual language.

On display will be prototypes, drawings, couture samples, models, first editions and finished industrial objects. The exhibition will also explore ‘quiet’ design, which will demonstrate how design surrounds us, how it plays a role in shaping the way we live and how it enables us to understand the world around us.

Key pieces in the collection include the Anglepoise lamp, the original Mini and the Moulton bicycle. These will be displayed alongside large scale architectural models including Sir Norman Foster’s HSBC bank headquarters in Hong Kong, couture garments and street furniture such as, UK road signs and traffic lights.

Supplemented by loans and gifts and celebrating new additions to the collection, ‘This is Design’ will also look at the changing role of collecting design and the future developments of the Design Museum collection as it prepares to move to a new home at the former Commonwealth Institute.
