The Trend Boutique love the work of Australian designer Greg Hatton who focuses on the use of natural & recycled materials to create stunningly simple furniture & landscape environments for indoors & outdoors. Completely on trend for the Spring Summer 2011, Greg's pared down designs that celebrate the imperfections of these materials fit perfectly with the resurgence of natural woods & corks throughout the interiors market for this season.

As we embrace falling back in love with nature, being based in rural Australia Greg's work exudes that laid-back lifestyle that we in Blighty envy, and this has no doubt been bought about through his varied, & free-spirited background.  Originally working in some standard jobs that  did however all incorporate the outdoors, he then went on to take a two year sabbatical overseas, before training as a stone mason. This rich source of working in the elements and passion for all things natural are very evident in his work, which now combines individual commissions, landscaping, and his great furniture.

What we like about his work is that he lets the materials speak for themselves, whether he is using stone or wood, he sets about revealing the inherent beauty of the indigenous trees that he uses, often keeping them in their near natural form. Although his pieces have a rustic style, the proportions & intricacies of his designs ensure that they create impact.

Added to his work with natural timber & stone, Greg also works with recycled materials to similar effect. Using old wharf timbers Greg re-fashions them into handmade furniture that caters to our new eco-conscious approach to life, fantastic centre pieces for our new austere luxury homes. His designs show that this new frugal way of living does not need mean that we abandon everything of beauty, but instead have a new optimistic and sustainable approach.

With Greg's love of the outdoors it is no surprise that he also collaborates with his colleague Leila Sanderson who designs these amazing teepees, a great way to connect with the outside world whilst sheltering from the elements, and of course great fun too.

The Trend Boutique think it's great the way you can see Greg's love of the materials & environment he uses and how it is totally ingrained in his persona when he talks about how he's been making things since he was 'able to hit a nail with a hammer'. Craftmanship & artisian principles, re-connecting with nature, and a frugal, but upbeat way of life are all trends that are coming into focus this decade, however Greg Hatton just does this through his honest drive & passion for what he does.
